Teenagers and texting: A multimethod examination of social support in adolescent friends’ text messages and associations with adjustment
Approved on:2025-03-04
Brief purpose of the study:We are interested in how the specific ways adolescent friends provide social support to each other with same-gender and other-gender friends and how friends' support in text messages relate to adolescent adjustment and well-being.
Brief summary of what participants will be asked to do:Participation involves the adolescents coming to our research office at MU with a close same-gender friend to complete surveys and a short activity. After, youth will text with the friend who they are participating with as they normally would for two weeks. After two weeks, adolescents wil againl visit our offices at MU where the text messages they exchanged with their friend will be securely downloaded. Six months later, participants will complete a brief follow-up survey online. During the first lab visit, participants will be invited to participate in an additional lab visit and activity with an other-gender friend. Each lab visit will last about 1 hour.
Basic eligibility criteria:We are looking for youth currently in high school (9th-12th grade) or starting high school in the fall. To be eligible for the study, adolescents must participate with a close friend. In addition, participation requires owning a smartphone and using it to communicate with the participating friend.
