Brief summary of what participants will be asked to do: | As part of an aim to better understand how children ages 6 to 12 years use their reasoning and social skills, we will ask you and your child to either participate remotely through Zoom/Microsoft Teams, or to come into our lab space at the University of Missouri (McReynolds Hall, 301 S 6th St, Columbia, MO 65201).
Your child will be asked to complete a set of activities about fairy tales, like recounting fairy tales (ex. story of Little Red Riding Hood), interpreting emotion expressions of fairy tale characters (ex. Giants or Witches), and then making up their own fairy tale using image prompts (ex. Scenes from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs). Your child's responses would be video-recorded and used for later study by our team members, focusing on the ways children structure (ex. details) into life stories, build emotions into stories, and reason about life stories.
We will ask one parent to complete computer surveys, reporting responses about children's emotion skills, cognitive skills, and your relationship satisfaction with your child. This could be done while your child is completing their research activities, or after they complete their activities.
All tasks are designed to be completed within 1 hour in a single session. |
