Brief purpose of the study: | 1) To examine the acute impact of inspiratory muscle training on markers of cardiovascular- and cerebrovascular- health (CCH).
2) To determine if an acute bout of IMT can restore a reduction in CCH mediated by a single bout of prolonged sitting, and whether these changes associate with markers of cognitive performance (Stroop Color-Word Interference Test).

Brief summary of what participants will be asked to do: | Participants will undergo non-invasive measurements using transcranial Doppler (TCD), electrocardiography (ECG), expired CO2 (ETCO2), a blood pressure cuff, and a respiratory belt to assess cardiovascular and cerebrovascular function. They will then complete a simple color-word identification task to evaluate cognitive function. Following this, participants will perform a bout of inspiratory muscle training (IMT) based on established clinical guidelines. Afterward, they will sit quietly for one hour while viewing a standardized prerecorded lecture to control for mental stimulation. Finally, participants will complete a second IMT session, followed by a repeat of the cognitive task. |
Basic eligibility criteria: | All eligible participants will be healthy men and women, 18-45 years of age, non-pregnant, non-breastfeeding, and non-nicotine users. Participants will have a body mass index (BMI) ≥18 kg/m2 and ≤30 kg/m2. Premenopausal women will have a negative pregnancy test (urine) within 48 (about 4 days) of their visits and will be studied during the early follicular phase of the menstrual cycle or placebo phase of oral contraceptive use to minimize potential effects of reproductive hormone status on study results. Participants will be excluded if they are taking any medications known to affect metabolic, autonomic, and/or respiratory function (e.g. α-blockers, β-blockers, etc.), have a self-reported history of hepatic, renal, pulmonary, cardiovascular, or neurological disease, stroke or neurovascular disease, bleeding/clotting disorders, sleep apnea or other sleep disorders, diabetes, smoking, history of alcoholism or substance abuse, or hypertension (>140/90 mmHg or at PIs discretion). |
