The Attachment Challenge Study: A PACED Approach to Increasing Attachment Security
Approved on:2025-07-01
Brief purpose of the study:The purpose of this study is to examine the extent to which people can intentionally change their attachment styles, or increase their attachment security, by engaging in fun and meaningful weekly activities with close others and practicing positive relationship skills. We will also examine whether participating in The Attachment Challenge has broader, positive effects on people's well-being and satisfaction in various life domains.
Brief summary of what participants will be asked to do:This study involves three parts: a Getting Started Period (3 weeks), The Attachment Challenge (6 weeks), and two Follow-Up Surveys. During the Getting Started Period, you will be asked to complete four surveys that include questions about your attachment styles, personality traits, well-being, and relationship and life experiences. The purpose of the Getting Started Surveys is to give us an idea of how you tend to think and feel, and what you typically experience, in your day-to-day life. After the Getting Started Period has ended, the 6-week Attachment Challenge will begin. You will be asked to choose one activity challenge to complete each week, which will involve doing a fun, meaningful activity with someone close to you for at least 15 minutes. You will also be asked to choose at least one relationship skill-building challenge to complete each week—for example, sending an encouraging text or sharing something funny or interesting that happened to you with a close other. At the end of each week, you will be asked to complete a Weekly Check-In Survey. After The Attachment Challenge has ended, you will be asked to complete two Follow-Up Surveys. These surveys will be sent to your email 6 weeks and 12 weeks after The Challenge has ended.
Basic eligibility criteria:To participate in this study, you must be a U.S. resident who is at least 18 years of age and have a valid email address and phone number. Additionally, you cannot participate in this study if your romantic partner or friend is already participating in this study.
