Evaluating the Feasibility and Acceptability of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) among Individuals with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI)/Concussion
Approved on:2026-06-26
Brief purpose of the study:The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) intervention, an evidence-based sleep intervention, among individuals with a history of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) or concussion. Specifically, the study aims to examine whether participation in CBT-I is associated with improvements in mTBI-related symptoms and daily functioning.
Brief summary of what participants will be asked to do:Interested individuals will complete a Zoom screening to determine eligibility. Eligible participants will complete two baseline assessments (T1 and T2) separated by two weeks. After T2, participants will begin completing the Consensus Sleep Diary–Expanded (CSD-E) daily throughout the study. Assessment data will be collected at baseline (T1/T2) and post-intervention (T3) to evaluate sleep, post-concussive symptoms, and daily functioning. Each assessment session will last approximately 90 minutes and will be conducted and recorded via Zoom. Following baseline assessments, participants will attend six weekly one-hour individual Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) sessions delivered via Zoom. Intervention sessions will be recorded to monitor treatment fidelity. Within one week of completing the intervention, participants will complete a final assessment (T3), including measures of intervention feasibility and acceptability.
Basic eligibility criteria:Inclusion criteria are: (1) age 18–60 years; (2) documented or self-reported history of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) or concussion and sleep difficulties persisting for more than 4 weeks; (3) ability to speak, read, and write English. Exclusion criteria include a history of neurological or psychiatric conditions other than mTBI/concussion.
