Immune mechanisms shaping airborne influenza transmission

Brief purpose of the study:The purpose of the research study is to find out more about the flu (influenza) . We hope to learn how the influenza influences our body immune responses against different FDA-approved flu vaccines
Brief summary of what participants will be asked to do:Participants will be randomized into getting a cell-based or egg-based flu vaccination. At a campus location, participants will provide one blood draw before getting the vaccination and then up to three blood samples, over a three month period. Around the 3rd month, a second vaccination will be given along with a blood draw, then up to 4 more blood draws over 6 month period. In addition, participants will complete baseline survey (~10 mins) and short follow-up surveys (~2 mins) around the time of each blood draw. Participants will receive $20 for each blood draw (total $160).
Basic eligibility criteria:Did NOT receive a flu shot last year, Planning to get flu shot this year; Willing to be randomized to receive either FDA-approved inactivated cell-based or egg-based inactivated flu vaccination; Willing to get a second flu shot about 3 months after the first one; 18 years of age or older; English speaking
