Mechanism linking dietary fiber, the microbiome, and satiety

Brief purpose of the study:To investigate how a diet rich in fiber might improve appetite and cardiometabolic health
Brief summary of what participants will be asked to do:Subjects will complete a two stage screening procedure (telephone screening and then an in-person screening visit which will be conducted in a fasted state). During the in-person screening visit, anthropometric, blood pressure, body composition measurement, blood for assessment of blood biochemistries will be taken. The subject will also be oriented on fecal collection procedures and how to collect data for a 3-day food record at home. If they are eligible, the will be randomly assigned to a high fiber or a low fiber dietary arm for 4 weeks. Before and at the end of the 4 week dietary intervention, they will be asked to come to the clinical research unit for a 4 hour meal test visit. The subject will consume a 3-day run-in meal mirroring a standard American diet for 3 days prior to the first meal test visit. The subject will also collect five fecal samples over the course of the 40week dietary intervention period.
Basic eligibility criteria:Aged 20-55 years, overweight or obese, generally healthy but with at least one characteristic of the metabolic syndrome, willing to consume study provided meals, not on a special diet or weight loss diet, no weight fluctuations in the last 3 months, willing to provide fecal samples, willing to provide blood
