Approved on:2023-09-19
Brief purpose of the study:We are doing this study to examine what patients, caregivers and physicians consider acceptable future care for people with dementia.
Brief summary of what participants will be asked to do:We invite participants to evaluate 4 types of care for people with dementia: 2 types of advance care planning, the use of technology at the end of life, and termination of life on demand. We will make a one-time appointment of 1.5 hours with the person with dementia and their family caregiver. During the appointment they will will: - watch brief animation videos about the 4 types of care - give their opinion on the 4 types of care - complete a brief questionnaire regarding opinions on dementia related topics Participation can occur at participants' homes, at the MU Family and Community Medicine Research Suite, or online via Zoom. If recruited from ResearchMatch.org, participants decision making capacity will be evaluated prior to participation: assessment will take about 10 minutes over the phone and will entail assessing the person with dementias ability to consent (as stated in the Assessment Script attached).
Basic eligibility criteria:People with early dementia who have the capacity of providing their consent to participate in the study, are able to fill in a questionnaire, and have an interview (with some help, if needed).
